Smarty Pins is a trivia game for Google Maps. It’s not quite as innovative as GeoGuessr, but it’s a fun way to test your knowledge of geography in a variety of different categories. It works in the Chrome browser, Firefox and Safari, but not Opera. (Not sure about Internet Explorer.)
Here are the categories:
“Featured Topics” includes World Cup trivia right now.
If you miss a question, you’ll lose kilometers (rather than points). And if you miss too many questions, you’ll run out of kilometers and the game is over. I didn’t play long enough to find out if you can win this game in any way., although you can earn bronze, silver and gold trophies for answering 5, 10, (and maybe 15) questions correctly. I ran out of kilometers before I got to 15.
Answering correctly doesn’t give you extra kilometers unless you can do it quickly enough to earn the bonus, which is disappointingly small and disappears after 15 seconds — not long enough to read the question and answer correctly in many cases.
When you get a new question, it sends you to the general area, so your chances of being VERY far off are slim — but I still found myself 100 or 500 km. off a few times and the game ended.
It would be more satisfying if there was a way to win, or at least to earn kilometers more easily, but it’s a fun way to spend a little time with Google Maps and quiz yourself on geography.
