Umano is a free app for iOS and Android that allows you to listen to news articles, read by “real people”, who mostly seem to be voice actors and radio/TV professionals.

When you launch the app, it will ask you if you want to log in, or skip the log in. You can still listen to articles without logging in. But if you do sign up, you can track your listening history and create playlists.

First, you’ll choose what kind of categories of news you want to add to your feed. There are dozens to choose from, from broad categories to specific sources (“channels”). Click on “subscribe” to add them to your feed.

Choose a story to listen to. The controls are on the bottom: Play/Pause, Rewind and Fast Forward, rewind 15 seconds, and a control for speaking speed.

At the top of the screen is a book symbol. Click on that and it will take you to the original article, so you can read along as you listen.
