Behind the Name

Find out what a name means and its etymology (where it comes from) on Behind the Name. It’s easily searchable and comprehensive, with names from many different languages and countries — Japan is on the list, too, just click “More…”

They highlight one name every day, and you can find names by meaning (Tools → Name Themes), see what the most popular names have been in many different countries (Names → Popularity) and much more.

There is even a list of news articles about names and naming (Names → Introduction → Articles…), which is where I found an article from 2011 about a couple in Israel who named their child Like (as in the Facebook Like button). Wow. Can you imagine a Japanese couple naming their child いいね!
